Dominic Solanke Optimistic Ahead of Potential Second England Cap After Seven-Year Hiatus

Posted : 09 October 2024

Dominic Solanke expressed his enduring hope of representing England again as he prepares for what could be his second cap, seven years after his international debut. The forward, whose only appearance for the national team came in a substitute role against Brazil in 2017, has impressed interim manager Lee Carsley with his strong start to the season. England is set to face Greece at Wembley in the Nations League on Thursday, followed by a match against Finland in Helsinki three days later.

Solanke, who transferred to Tottenham from Bournemouth in August, reflected on his debut, describing it as one of the "greatest achievements" of his career. He noted the significance of playing for his country, stating, "From when you're young and you're just playing football, you obviously just want to make it, but representing your country is a whole other level." He acknowledged the hard work that has gone into reaching this point, recognizing the journey he's undertaken to return to the national team.

Throughout his absence from the England squad, Solanke maintained a positive mindset, believing that he would have another opportunity to play. He said, "I didn't think it wouldn't come around. It was a fact of keeping doing what I'm doing and just keep playing well and scoring goals." His dedication and belief in his abilities have now led him back to the squad, and he expressed gratitude for the chance to represent his country once again.

Having scored three goals in eight appearances this season, Solanke remarked on the timing of his return, asserting that everything happens for a reason. He said, "I think everything happens at the right time for you. Everyone's journey is different. I feel like this is the way it had to be for me, and I feel my game's clicking now." Solanke is one of three center-forwards included in the squad alongside captain Harry Kane and Aston Villa's Ollie Watkins, with Kane cleared to play following an injury scare. However, Ezri Konsa, Kobbie Mainoo, and Morgan Gibbs-White have been ruled out, with Carsley choosing not to bring in replacements.
