Nelson Abiam's header in the added minutes of the first half was all that Doma United FC needed to secure a slim victory against Niger Tornadoes and reclaim the top position in the log of the 2023/2024 Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL).
The encounter, which started at a slow pace, saw both sides grow into the game midway through the half, with the hosts winning more set plays against the visitors.
A few minutes before the break, Nelson Abiam connected with a decent cross and nodded home to break the deadlock.
The second half resumed, and the Ikon Allah Boys elevated their game, with the quartet of Akintunde, Bashir, and Clinton tormenting the hosts with their mesmerizing displays.
Tornadoes introduced the likes of Yahuza Bala, Eric Frimpong, and Bolaji Adeyemo, and the changes proved quite helpful as they added more flair and coordination to the team's play.
Bashir Usman came close to restoring parity twice; first, Kingdom Osayi parried his effort, and the second time he was unlucky not to level the score when his shot hit the crossbar in the closing stages.
With the victory at the Pantami Stadium in Gombe, Doma United FC now has 21 points from 11 matches with six wins, three draws, and one loss.
Speaking after the match, Niger Tornadoes Coach, Hamza Abdul'azeez Abara, commended the fighting spirit of his players, especially during the second half.
"I'm happy with the boys today; they showed good character and commitment, which means the team is gradually picking up. All we need to do now is to consolidate on this impressive outing."
"Doma United is a good side, especially at home, with massive support from their fans."
"To our fans back home, we solicit their support and patience; the team is a work in progress."
