Diogo Jota’s Fitness in Doubt for Liverpool's Clash Against Brentford

Posted : 17 January 2025

Diogo Jota's availability for Liverpool's upcoming Premier League match against Brentford is uncertain after he missed training ahead of Saturday's clash. The 28-year-old forward, who had recently returned from an upper body injury sustained in late October, had played a crucial role in Liverpool's draw against Nottingham Forest, scoring after coming off the bench.

Head coach Arne Slot confirmed Jota was not training and would be assessed to determine if he could feature in the match, expressing concern over a slight niggle Jota experienced after playing against Forest.

While Jota's fitness remains a doubt, Slot mentioned that Luis Diaz, who has been suffering from a sore throat, was expected to train ahead of the match. The manager emphasized his focus on the upcoming fixture rather than paying attention to the movements of rival clubs in the Premier League.

Slot's primary concern is optimizing the team's performance and ensuring they remain focused on their immediate objectives, knowing the demands of the long season ahead.

Liverpool currently lead the Premier League with 47 points from 20 matches, holding a four-point advantage over second-placed Arsenal. However, Slot is aware of the challenges Brentford could present, especially at their home ground, where they have scored more goals than any other team this season.

Despite their strong position at the top of the table, Liverpool has been conceding goals in recent matches, something Slot acknowledged as a concern, though not one he considers alarming.

The team has struggled to maintain clean sheets, a stark contrast to their earlier performances in the season when solid defense was a hallmark.

Slot explained that the defensive issues stem from the fine balance between attack and defense, noting that while chances given away have not increased significantly, strikers and defenders both face periods of difficulty.

As Liverpool heads into the match, the focus remains on securing a good result while addressing the defensive lapses that have emerged.
