French national team coach Didier Deschamps expressed optimism on Monday about Paul Pogba’s career prospects after the midfielder’s doping ban was reduced. Initially facing a four-year ban, Pogba recently saw his suspension shortened to 18 months by the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS). Deschamps noted this as a hopeful turning point for the player, sharing on the French Football Federation’s (FFF) website that it’s “excellent news” and that Pogba will be eligible to return to play by March.
Pogba, capped 91 times and a World Cup winner, tested positive for testosterone in August 2023 following a Juventus-Udinese match in Italy. The positive test reportedly resulted from a food supplement prescribed by a U.S.-based doctor. Although he was provisionally suspended in September of that year, the Italian National Anti-Doping Tribunal officially handed him a four-year ban in February, which CAS has now modified, allowing him to return sooner.
Reflecting on the long journey back, Deschamps shared that he had a lengthy conversation with Pogba, acknowledging the challenges the 31-year-old has faced, including persistent injuries, personal difficulties such as a blackmail case involving his brother, and now the suspension. Deschamps underscored the toll this period has taken on Pogba, both on and off the field.
Though Pogba will still serve a suspension until March 2025, Deschamps believes this reduced ban brings a new chance for him to reignite his passion for football. As he awaits the end of his suspension, Pogba now has a clearer path to potentially returning to the French national team, reigniting his hope to play professionally once again.
