Demarai Gray celebrated his 27th birthday with a standout performance, scoring two goals to help Jamaica secure their first victory in the 2023 Concacaf Gold Cup. The Reggae Boyz defeated Trinidad and Tobago 4-1 in Group A at CITYPARK in Saint Louis, Missouri.
Gray opened the scoring in the 14th minute after a pass from Leon Bailey, calmly finishing the chance. Three minutes later, Bailey himself found the back of the net with a left-footed strike, extending Jamaica's lead to 2-0. Just before halftime, Kevon Lambert set up Gray for his second goal, giving Jamaica a commanding 3-0 advantage.
Trinidad and Tobago made changes at halftime and fought to get back into the game. Andre Rampersad converted a low cross from Levi Garcia, reducing the deficit to 3-1. However, neither team managed to score again until stoppage time.
In the 65th minute, Trinidad and Tobago goalkeeper Nicklas Frenderup denied Shamar Nicholson's close-range attempt, and the rebound narrowly eluded Michail Antonio. Nevertheless, Jamaica sealed their victory late in the game when a long shot from 17-year-old Dujuan Richards took a deflection and beat Frenderup, reestablishing the Reggae Boyz's three-goal lead at 4-1.
This encounter marked the first-ever meeting between these Caribbean rivals in the Gold Cup. Jamaica now looks ahead to their final group match against Saint Kitts and Nevis, while Trinidad and Tobago will conclude Group A action against the United States.
The win provides Jamaica with momentum and a boost in confidence as they aim to progress further in the tournament.
