The hope of Bayelsa Queens retaining their Nigeria Women Football League title was finally dashed on Sunday as they suffered a defeat to Delta Queens
After beating rivals Rivers Angels in the last game, the hope of the Yenogoa-based club retaining its title soared and the return of Falconet forward Sebastian Flourish also added to their advantage.
But it was never meant to be on Sunday at the Stephen Keshi stadium in Asaba Delta.
Chisom Henry’s 14th-minute own goal put Bayelsa Queens ahead and ended the first half with the lead.
Delta Queens improved their performance in the second half and home fans cheered for them as they equalized in the 67th minute through Chinaza Agoh’s acrobatic kick.
Agoh completed her brace and sealed the game in the 86th minute of the game and all the efforts of Bayelsa Queens to level the game proved futile.
The result means Delta Queens is the 2023 champions of the Nigeria Women’s Football League, and apart from the N10 million naira reward, they will also represent the country in the WAFU B Women’s Champions League qualifier.
