Delta Queens FC on Wednesday in Asaba, started on a positive note, its quest to finish as Champions of the 2022/2023 Nigeria Women Football League.
The Delta Queens ran out with a comfortable 3-1 defeat of confluence Queens in the Match Day 1 of the ongoing Nigerian women football league Super 6.
The Pearls of Delta were all out from the blast of the whistle and opened the scoring in the 19th minute after stylish midfield meastro, Ekpeyong Effiong, ran into a pass from Mercy Omokwo and raised past her marker before slotting the ball beyond Confluence Queens' goalkeeper, Linda Jiwuaku.
The Kogi state side, Confluence Queens, came looking for an equaliser which finally came in the 31st minute when Martha Peter lobbed the ball pass Anderlene Mgbeche in goal for Delta Queens to send shock waves on home fans at the Stephen Keshi International stadium.
It took the Pearls about two minutes to restore their lead as Vera Samuel smashed home from a rebound to end the first half on a 2-1 goal margin.
Both sides resumed into a more cagey second half as Confluence continued to try getting an equaliser even as Delta Queens failed to convert chances.
Just when it looked like there will be no goal in the second half, Ekpeyong Effiong scored a brace to seal the game on 3-1.
With the Victory, Delta Queens leads on top of group B, and will next take on Edo Queens in Match Day 3, on Friday, June 9 at the Stephen Keshi Township Stadium, Asaba.
