The Delta State government has claimed that it has paid the backlog of salaries owed to officials and players of the two state-owned football clubs, Warri Wolves Football Club of Warri and Delta Queens Football Club of Asaba.
The claim was made by the newly appointed Director General of the Delta State Sports Commission, Festus Ohwodjero, after the players received their payments yesterday.
According to Mr. Ohwodjero, the Governor of the State, Hon. Sheriff Oborevwori, had ordered the immediate payment of all outstanding salaries of players and officials of the clubs after being briefed on the situation.
The Director General said that the Governor had swiftly approved the payment of the six months' salary and bonuses owed to Warri Wolves players, as well as the four months' salary and bonuses owed to Delta Queens players and officials.
According to him, the salaries were paid directly into the players' and officials' accounts, unlike the usual procedure of paying the salaries into the clubs' accounts, who subsequently pay the players and officials.
Mr. Ohwodjero revealed that Governor Oborevwori had vowed never to allow such a situation to occur again, as he had not been properly briefed on the situation until Thursday, asserting that the welfare of the players was paramount to the state.
It can be recalled that the players of Delta Queens had staged a meeting with the Director General on Thursday to register their predicament, with the Director General assuring them that the Governor had already set in motion the payment of all their outstanding salaries.
Delta Queens, who are the defending champions of the Nigeria Women Football League, had failed to replicate the heroics of last season on their way to winning the league and remained unbeaten the whole season.
The team this season missed out on a Super Six place and will not be defending their title when the Super Six is held later in the year.
