Dele-Bashiru fit for WCQs; Okoye returns to action

Posted : 11 March 2025

Lazio midfielder Fisayo Dele-Bashiru has been given medical clearance to return to action following his recent injury setback. The talented player, who honed his skills at Manchester City's academy, has been included in Lazio’s squad for their upcoming Serie A clash against Udinese at the Stadio Olimpico. However, he will start the match from the bench as he gradually reintegrates into the team.

Dele-Bashiru had been sidelined for three consecutive matches across all competitions due to an ankle injury sustained during Lazio’s goalless draw against Venezia on February 22. His absence was a blow for the Biancocelesti, as they missed his energy and creativity in midfield. The midfielder has been working hard on his rehabilitation and is now fit enough to be considered for selection once again.

His return comes at a crucial time, especially with Nigeria’s 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers on the horizon. Dele-Bashiru has been named in the Super Eagles’ provisional squad for the upcoming matches against Rwanda and Zimbabwe, but his inclusion in the final squad remains uncertain. He will need to prove his match fitness and form to convince head coach Eric Chelle that he is ready for international duty.

If he is given minutes in tonight’s game, it could be a decisive opportunity for him to show that his injury concerns are behind him. A strong performance would boost his chances of securing a spot in Nigeria’s final squad for the crucial World Cup qualifiers in March. The midfielder will be eager to make an impact and reclaim his place in both club and national team plans.

Meanwhile, a key development in Udinese’s starting lineup is the return of Super Eagles goalkeeper Maduka Okoye. His selection for the provisional squad of Nigeria’s World Cup qualifiers raised some eyebrows, considering his recent struggles with injuries and inconsistent playing time. However, his presence in the starting eleven against Lazio signals his full recovery.

Okoye has not featured in a competitive game for Nigeria since December 1, 2024, when he played the full match in Udinese’s Serie A encounter with Genoa. His return to fitness and subsequent call-up for the Super Eagles mark a potential turning point in his international career. With the qualifiers approaching, he will be keen to stake his claim for a place in the final squad.

Having fully recovered from a wrist injury, Okoye now finds himself under increased scrutiny. His performance against Lazio could determine whether he secures a spot in the final squad for the upcoming World Cup qualifiers. As competition for the Super Eagles’ goalkeeping position intensifies, Okoye will be determined to prove his worth and regain his status as one of Nigeria’s top shot-stoppers.
