Defending champions, unlike other clubs, have not hidden their obsession with winning the league at any slightest opportunity. Recently, the results have favored the Peoples Elephant, putting them in the race for a record 10th title as league winners.
The Peoples Elephant will welcome a team on the verge, Doma United FC, to the Enyimba International Stadium for the 2023/2024 NPFL Match Day 24 showdown.
For the Finidi George side, they have churned out decent performances in the last league matches, especially a double-header win over Shooting Stars FC. Although Enyimba International suffered an unexpected loss in the last Match Day 23 against struggling Akwa United at the Goodswill Akpabio Stadium, where they lost 1-3, the quality of the team is not in question, having secured good wins in the past, including a 4-0 victory over Gombe United FC on Match Day 22.
Enyimba International FC currently occupies the 5th position with 39 points, tied with Remo Stars in 4th position but with a superior goal advantage.
Enyimba Technical Adviser Finidi George has called on his players to aim for the three points against Doma United in Sunday’s Nigeria Professional Football League (NPFL).
In a chat on Saturday, the 1994 Africa Cup of Nations winner urged the players to go with a winning mentality.
“The game against Doma United is a game that we have to push and see how we can win it,” he said.
“It’s a home game, and Enyimba is playing at home; victory is always expected, but I know it’s going to be a tough game. At the end of the day, I think we are going to win it.
“The players need to go with a winning mentality at every game they play.”
Enyimba may have struggled in recent weeks, following two wins in their last five league matches, but the People’s Elephants have done well this term and are poised to do the magic against visiting Doma United, currently experiencing downturns in the continental spot chase.
Doma United only managed one win in their last ten away league matches, and it was a huge 4-0 win over Gombe United during the Gombe derby last year. They lost six and drew three of their last ten away matches, and their current form isn’t better, with three defeats in their last five matches. Doma Utd travel to Aba this weekend, occupying the 9th position with 33 points.
