Defender Jaouen Hadjam of Nantes Dropped as He Refused to End Ramadan Fast

Posted : 16 April 2023
After keeping up his fast during Ramadan, Nantes head coach Antoine Kombouare benched Algerian defender Jaouen Hadjam.

Hadjam was scheduled to play for Nantes against Reims in their most recent Ligue 1 match on Sunday, but Kombouare left him off the roster because he refused to break his fast for Ramadan. After watching his club suffer a 3-0 loss at the Stade de la Beaujoire, Nantes' head coach justified his choice to bench the 20-year-old.

"There is no controversy. Those who fast, I support them. On match days, you should not fast. It is not a punishment. I set rules. It’s his choice and I respect it," Kombouare said

Ramadan, which ends in the last week of April with the celebration of Eid al-Fitr, is a month-long fast observed by Muslims throughout the day.

To allow players to break their fast during games in England, the FA has instructed match officials to use natural pauses. Several players in the Premier League are reputed to fast throughout Ramadan, including Mohamed Salah, N'Golo Kante, and Abdoulaye Doucoure.

After losing at home to Reims 3-0, Nantes will turn their attention to their Wednesday match against Lyon in the French Cup semifinals.
