Debutant Sporting Lagos FC dreams of winning 2023/2024 NPL, says Chairman

Basking in the euphoria of their first ever Nigeria Premier League (NPL) win with a convincing victory over the visiting Gombe United FC on Monday, the chairman of Sporting Lagos FC, Godwin Enakhena says winning the league at first attempt remains an assailable project.
Enakhena made this assertion in an exclusive interview on the sidelines of the Sporting Lagos FC's promising start to the 2023/2024 NPL with a 2-0 win over Gombe United FC.
Recall that the league debutant, Sporting Lagos FC on Monday in the Match Day 1 fixtures of the 2023/2024 NPL comfortably dispatched the visiting Jewels of Savannah 2-0 in a match played at the Mobolaji Johnson Arena.
Enakhena making reference to the first win said that the club had more in its sleeves than the win over Gombe United, adding that winning the league was the main target.
``The target for us is to win the league, we want to win it and we have been drumming that for people to hear. Who says it is not possible?
``Ocean Boys of Port Harcourt have done it before in Nigeria and some other clubs abroad, so who says we can't?
``Winning the league remains an achievable target, we want to play in the continent come next season and I think we can do that.
``We have put together some bunch of quality players that can make the difference at the end of the day,'' he said.
On the team's performances at the league opener, an upbeat former Lagos-based MFM FC's Chairman, Enakhena said it had been well orchestrated to start the league on a brighter note.
``This is what we have planned for, we want to start the league on a good note, we all know what it is in football that the first game matters a lot.
``The first win will tell how far you are going, especially on a lighter note, that our next game is against Akwa United, a team that was battered by Bayelsa United.
``Seriously, we needed to win so as to send the right message that we are ready for the Nigerian Premier League,'' he said.
Enakhena also enthused that his experience managing MFM FC would be an added advantage in administering a more challenging role in Sporting Lagos FC.
``The first thing I will be bringing to Sporting Lagos FC is experience which cannot be bought. When I started Sporting Lagos FC in Ilaji in Ibadan, I said we will not spend more than a season in the lower league and that it is exactly.
``It wasn't just about me, it is the confidence that whatever I do, God is behind it, I will put in my best and everything that I got and leave the rest for God.
``We are in the Premier League, but MFM FC's job is a different kettle of fish because the vision is about youth empowerment, while Sporting Lagos FC is purely business driven.
``We want to build a brand that is appealing, people must see that product and want to buy. I once said to people on Social Media that they should come and enjoy massive sporting hospitality like never before,'' he said.
