Bournemouth's 19-year-old defender Dean Huijsen scored his first Premier League goal to secure a 1-0 victory over Tottenham Hotspur on Thursday. Huijsen found the back of the net in the 17th minute, capitalizing on poor defending as he headed in Marcus Tavernier's corner.
Despite creating several chances, Bournemouth couldn't extend their lead, with an Evanilson goal ruled out for offside in the second half. The win moved Bournemouth to ninth in the table with 21 points, while Tottenham, struggling with inconsistency, dropped to 10th with 20 points.
Tottenham's lackluster performance came as a stark contrast to their 4-0 thrashing of Manchester City less than two weeks ago, which had briefly raised hopes for a turnaround under manager Ange Postecoglou.
Since then, Spurs have faltered, drawing at home to AS Roma in the Europa League and being held by Fulham in the Premier League. Against Bournemouth, they struggled to pose any significant attacking threat, registering their sixth league defeat of the season.
Bournemouth, on the other hand, dominated with 21 attempts on goal and showed the grit that has helped them secure impressive home wins over Arsenal, Manchester City, and Tottenham this season.
Huijsen, who has been a standout talent, expressed his delight after the match, saying, "This is a really exciting win. Every little boy dreams of playing in the Premier League, and I'm so happy to get my first goal." His well-timed header highlighted Tottenham's recurring struggles with defending set pieces.
The game could have taken a different turn had Dominic Solanke converted an early chance for Tottenham instead of sending his shot over the bar. Moments later, Huijsen’s goal punished Spurs’ vulnerability on set pieces, which has become a recurring issue.
Reflecting on his goal, Huijsen credited the team's set-piece coach and described the moment as "goose bumps," emphasizing the team's preparation and his role in executing it. Bournemouth’s strong home form continues to frustrate top sides, adding another impressive scalp to their season.
