Dani Parejo's Late Penalty Secures Villarreal's 4-3 Victory Over Celta Vigo

Posted : 27 August 2024

Dani Parejo scored from a penalty rebound in the 10th minute of added time to secure a dramatic 4-3 home win for Villarreal against Celta Vigo on Monday. This victory allowed Villarreal to claim the top position in LaLiga, overtaking Celta Vigo, who had led the league at the start of the third round on goal difference from Real Madrid.

Celta Vigo, who had won their first two matches of the season, initially took the lead through Borja Iglesias, making his debut for Celta. Iglesias capitalized on a loose ball and scored into an empty net in the 12th minute. Villarreal equalized with a goal from Sergi Cardona, who was unmarked at the far post during a 26th-minute corner. Celta regained the lead before halftime with a goal from Oscar Mingueza.

The second half saw Villarreal equalize once more when substitute Thierno Barry, who had been on the field for only a minute, headed in a goal. Villarreal then took the lead when Celta defender Jailson inadvertently scored an own goal after a cross from Nicolas Pepe. However, Celta's Carl Starfelt equalized again in the 80th minute with a header.

In a tense finish, Celta's Hugo Alvarez fouled Barry in the box, leading to a penalty for Villarreal. Although Celta's goalkeeper Ivan Villar saved Parejo's initial penalty, Parejo scored from the rebound. This late goal secured the win for Villarreal, who now sit atop the LaLiga table with seven points.
