Dani Olmo's future at Barcelona has become uncertain after LaLiga blocked the club's attempts to register the Spain international, following the club's financial struggles. Barcelona had hoped to register Olmo as their flagship signing after securing him last summer, but LaLiga's stringent financial regulations limited the registration to December 31, 2024.
As a result, Barcelona sought alternative ways to include Olmo on their roster before the deadline, having already exhausted options for extending the registration deadline to June 30, 2025.
On Tuesday, Barcelona confirmed they had requested a new registration license from the Spanish football federation for Olmo and forward Pau Victor, both facing the same registration issue.
Reports indicated that this move would provide Barcelona with more time to complete the necessary administrative steps. However, LaLiga quickly issued a statement, clarifying that Barcelona had not yet presented any alternative plans that would allow them to register players starting January 2.
Barcelona had submitted plans to generate 100 million euros by selling VIP seats at their future expanded Camp Nou stadium, which would help finance Olmo's registration. Despite these efforts, progress on the paperwork has been slow.
The club's legal challenges have also been met with resistance, as a Barcelona court rejected a request to extend the registration, following a similar decision from a commercial court in the Catalan capital the previous week.
Olmo, whose contract runs until 2030, includes a clause that allows him to leave if he cannot be registered. The Spain playmaker, who has been a key player for both Barcelona and the Spanish national team, could face a departure due to the ongoing administrative issues, a scenario that would severely damage Barcelona’s title hopes.
Olmo has been a standout performer, contributing five goals in LaLiga and helping Spain secure Euro 2024 glory.
