Crystal Palace sign Michael Olise for four years

Posted : 17 August 2023
Amid interest from Chelsea, Crystal Palace's winger Michael Olise has committed to a fresh four-year contract with the club. Earlier this week, reports emerged that Chelsea had triggered a release clause worth approximately £35 million for the French Under-21 international. However, Steve Parish, the chairman of Palace, confirmed on Thursday that the 21-year-old, a London native, would be remaining at the club.

Olise had previously joined Palace from Reading on a five-year deal in 2021, although he had been a part of Chelsea's youth system before departing at the age of 14. Presently recovering from a hamstring injury sustained while playing for France in the European Under-21 Championship, Olise displayed a commendable performance during the 2022-23 season with Palace. He amassed 11 assists and scored two goals in 37 appearances, an achievement that led to him receiving the club's Player of the Year award.

As Chelsea's spending spree continues, they recently secured Moises Caicedo's signature for a potential fee of up to £115 million. Furthermore, they've also agreed upon an initial £53 million deal for Southampton midfielder Romeo Lavia. These acquisitions have sparked discussions about the club's adherence to the financial regulations of the sport.

While Palace faced the departure of their talisman Wilfried Zaha this summer, they kicked off the new season under the guidance of manager Roy Hodgson with a 1-0 victory on the road against Sheffield United.
