Teenage Nigerian forward Asher Agbinone recently received his first Premier League call-up during Crystal Palace's 1-1 draw against Chelsea at Stamford Bridge on Sunday. At just 18 years old, Agbinone was included in the matchday squad but did not see any action from the bench, as manager Oliver Glasner opted not to use him.
Agbinone's inclusion marked him as the second teenager of Nigerian descent to be part of the Eagles' matchday squad. He joined Franco Umeh-Chibueze, who was named to the bench for the sixth time in a Premier League fixture. Agbinone's promotion to the first team came after a series of impressive performances for Palace's youth teams.
His notable achievements with the youth squads earned him a spot in the first team's pre-season tour of the United States, where he scored in a 3-1 victory over Wolves in Maryland. Agbinone has been a part of Crystal Palace since he was in the U9 age group and has worked his way up through the ranks.
He made his Premier League 2 debut in February 2024, coming off the bench in a match against Leicester City. Agbinone signed a scholarship deal prior to the 2022-2023 season and secured his first professional contract in October 2022, demonstrating his rapid progress within the club.
Known for his versatility in the attacking positions, Agbinone scored fifteen goals in 32 matches in the U18 Premier League before earning a full-time place in the development squad. His skill and potential have been evident throughout his career thus far.
In the match against Chelsea, Crystal Palace managed to secure a draw after trailing initially. Eberechi Eze, a 2017 Super Eagles invitee, scored a brilliant goal in the 53rd minute to level the score, offsetting Nicolas Jackson's first-half opener.
