Cristiano Ronaldo capped his first full season in the Saudi Pro League by breaking the record for the most goals scored in a single campaign on Monday. The 39-year-old Portuguese star scored twice in Al Nassr's 4-2 victory over Al Ittihad on the final matchday, bringing his league tally to 35 goals for the season.
The previous record was held by former Al Nassr forward and Moroccan international Abderrazak Hamdallah, who netted 34 goals in the 2018-19 season. Ronaldo, who has had a storied career with Sporting, Manchester United, Real Madrid, and Juventus, joined Al Nassr in January 2023.
Ronaldo opened the scoring just before halftime by chesting down a long pass from Mohammed Al-Fatil and firing a low shot from the left side of the area. With 21 minutes left in the game, he headed in a corner from Marcelo Brozovic, celebrating wildly before being substituted five minutes later to a standing ovation from the home fans.
Despite Ronaldo's individual success, including four hat tricks and a league suspension, Al Nassr had a disappointing season. They finished second behind Al Hilal and failed to win the Saudi Cup or Asian Champions League. Al Hilal, led by coach Jorge Jesus and featuring stars like Neymar and Aleksandar Mitrovic, set a new world record with a 34-game winning streak and claimed the league title in a dominant campaign.
