Cristiano Ronaldo is poised to conclude the year as the leading goal-scorer globally, notching his 54th goal of 2023 during Al Nassr's 4-1 triumph over Al Taawoun in the Saudi Pro League on Saturday.
The Portuguese forward's remarkable tally in official competitions for both club and country, achieved in 59 matches, surpasses the goal counts of Harry Kane from Bayern Munich and Kylian Mbappé from Paris Saint-Germain (52 each), along with Erling Haaland from Manchester City (50). None of the top contenders will have further opportunities to play in 2023.
This marks the fifth occasion Ronaldo secures the title of the world's top scorer, previously accomplishing it in 2011, 2013, 2014, and 2015 during his tenure with Real Madrid. His current total of 54 goals is the highest he has achieved in a calendar year since his 55-goal performance in 2016, a year that saw him clinch one of his five Ballon d'Or awards.
Reacting to this accomplishment, the 38-year-old expressed gratitude on Instagram, stating, "54—I'll say when it's finished! Thanks, team."
On the one-year anniversary of his controversial departure from Manchester United, Ronaldo added to his 2023 goal haul in Al Nassr's victory over Al Taawoun. The Saudi club, leading 3-1 through goals from Marcelo Brozovic, Aymeric Laporte, and Otavio, witnessed Ronaldo's header from six yards out in the second minute of stoppage time.
This goal marked his 20th in 18 league games this season. Despite the triumph, Al Nassr maintains their second position in the Saudi Pro League standings with 46 points from 19 games, trailing leaders Al Hilal by seven points.
