Cristiano Ronaldo Ends Euro 2024 Journey as Portugal Falls to France in Quarter-Finals

Posted : 06 July 2024

Cristiano Ronaldo's journey in Euro 2024 ended after Portugal's loss to France in the quarter-finals. After a goalless 120 minutes, France triumphed over Roberto Martinez's team 5-3 in a dramatic penalty shootout, advancing to meet Spain in the next stage. This tournament marked an emotional chapter for the 39-year-old star, filled with significant highs and lows.

Ronaldo's Euro 2024 experience began with an assist against Turkey, cementing his status as one of the tournament's greatest players. A memorable moment occurred when a young fan ran onto the pitch to take a photo with him. However, he also experienced heartbreak, missing a crucial penalty against Slovenia in the round of 16, which brought him to tears. Despite this, he redeemed himself by scoring in the ensuing penalty shootout, helping his team reach the quarter-finals.

As Ronaldo stated, this was his last European Championship, and he leaves with numerous records. From his first goal against Greece in Euro 2004 to the unforgettable win in 2016, he scored 14 goals in Euro tournaments, the most in history. He participated in six Euros, more than any other player, and made 29 appearances, a record. He also holds the records for most appearances (73) and goals (55) in the qualifiers. While he did not break the record for the oldest scorer in the tournament, which belongs to Luka Modric, his impact remains unparalleled.

Ronaldo has amassed 895 goals in his career, making him the greatest scorer of all time. With 130 goals for Portugal, he is the top scorer in international football. He also holds the record for the most appearances in national team games with 211. Despite his Euro farewell, he remains focused on his club career in the Saudi League, where he broke the record for goals scored in a season with 35 and became the first player to be the top scorer in four different leagues.

Though he won't play in the Euros again, Ronaldo is determined to compete in the World Cup in two years in the USA, aiming to be the only player in history to participate in six World Cups. His next personal goal is particularly ambitious: to reach 1,000 career goals, a milestone no other player has achieved.
