Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi Are Just the Beginning, Prior to Their Bid to Host the 2030 World Cup, Saudi Arabia Is Looking to Sign Up to Fifty Elite Athletes

Ronaldo's signing for Al Nassr after amicably ending his contract with Manchester United prior to the 2022 World Cup shocked the footballing world.
As Al-Hilal apparently prepares a £350 million per year deal for the Argentine to get him to move to Saudi Arabia once his contract with Paris Saint-Germain expires, his archrival Messi may soon follow suit.
In order to join the SPL this summer, the Gulf nation intends to hire 50 best professional football players from Portugal's top division and the main five European leagues (England, France, Germany, Italy, and Spain).
The Saudi Pro League teams are already focusing on players whose contracts expire in the summer with the backing of the Saudi Ministry of Sport.
As a result, in recent months, the middle east has been connected to players like Luka Modric, Karim Benzema, Roberto Firmino, and Everton combination Yerry Mina and Abdoulaye Doucoure. Although many of them would like to stay in Europe, Saudi Arabia is making every effort to entice them to the nation.
"This won't be like the Chinese league a few years ago. It isn't a fire-hose strategy of blowing huge sums of money. Saudi Arabia is in a period of rapid transition and football is a mass participation sport with a huge following, as shown during the World Cup in Qatar, and the ambition is to grow the Saudi Pro League into the best in the region," report says.
"But this isn't about trying to sign the top 50 players in the world. It is about raising the quality and profile of the league and making it the first-choice destination outside of the big leagues in Europe."
But aside from Messi and Ronaldo, the teams won't offer other newcomers exorbitant salaries since they don't want to emulate the Chinese Super League, which conducted business in a similar way a few years ago.
