Cristian Stellini: Tottenham fires temporary manager following thrashing by Newcastle
Posted : 25 April 2023
After four games in charge, Tottenham Hotspur fired interim manager Cristian Stellini.
The choice was made the day after Spurs' 6-1 defeat at Newcastle, a performance that chairman Daniel Levy deemed "wholly unacceptable."
After Antonio Conte's 16-month tenure as Spurs manager came to an end, Stellini, 48, was named on March 26.
He is succeeded by Ryan Mason, who worked under Stellini and took over when Jose Mourinho was fired in 2021.
The loss against Newcastle on Sunday, where Spurs trailed 5-0 after 21 minutes, dealt a serious damage to their chances of qualifying for the Champions League.
"It was devastating to see," added Levy.
"We can look at many reasons why it happened and while myself, the board, the coaches and players must all take collective responsibility, ultimately the responsibility is mine."
Tottenham is sixth in the Premier League standings, six points back of Manchester United in fourth and Newcastle in third.
