Posted : 26 June 2023
Craig Brown, the former Scotland manager who led the national team to the World Cup finals in 1998, has passed away at the age of 82.
Serving as the longest-serving manager of the Scottish national team, Brown held the position from 1993 to 2001, overseeing 71 matches and successfully qualifying for both Euro 96 and the 1998 World Cup. He also contributed to the team's campaigns in the 1986 and 1990 World Cup tournaments.
Prior to his managerial career, Brown had stints at Preston North End and Motherwell before concluding his coaching journey at Aberdeen in 2013. He then transitioned into a board position at the club. Described as a beloved figure, Brown played various roles within Aberdeen, serving as a manager, director, and ambassador.
Recognized for his contributions to football, Brown was awarded a CBE (Commander of the Order of the British Empire) in 1999. He began his coaching career at Clyde in 1977 while working as a primary school headteacher.
Brown later became renowned for his work with the Scottish national team, initially joining Alex Ferguson's backroom staff for the 1986 World Cup. He continued as Andy Roxburgh's assistant, participating in the 1990 World Cup and Euro 92 finals.
When the chain of qualifying for five successive World Cups was broken, Brown took over as Scotland's manager. He achieved a record of 32 wins, 18 draws, and 20 defeats during his tenure.
One notable moment was Scotland's unconventional start to the France 98 qualifiers, as they faced no opposition in Tallinn due to Estonia's protest against a late change in kick-off time. Brown's team eventually secured qualification and faced Brazil in their opening match of the tournament, suffering a 2-1 loss in Paris.
Tributes poured in from the football community, with current Scotland manager Steve Clarke acknowledging Brown's contributions to the national team's sustained qualification. Brown's passing leaves a significant void in Scottish football, and he will be remembered as an influential and well-liked figure both on and off the pitch.
