Posted : 01 July 2023
Costa Rica and El Salvador played a tightly contested 0-0 draw at Red Bull Arena, giving themselves a chance to advance in Group C of the 2023 Concacaf Gold Cup. Neither team has secured a win yet but remains in contention for progression.
The first half was intense despite the absence of goals. Costa Rica started as the aggressors but couldn't convert their early chances, allowing El Salvador to grow into the match as time passed.
In the middle of the half, El Salvador dominated the opposing final third but struggled to create significant opportunities. However, just before halftime, El Salvador's Brayan Gil came close to scoring with a close-range strike that was denied by the crossbar. Costa Rica also had a great chance when Celso Borges unleashed a powerful shot, brilliantly saved by El Salvador goalkeeper Mario Gonzalez in the 39th minute.
The second half followed a similar pattern, with both teams exchanging momentum in short intervals. However, neither side could truly seize control of the game. The chances that did arise fizzled out or resulted in long-range attempts that didn't trouble the goalkeepers.
Costa Rica increased the pressure in the final 20 minutes, with Joel Campbell coming close to scoring but placing his shot just over the crossbar.
Anthony Contreras tried his luck from long distance in the 89th minute, and Waston had a final opportunity in the 94th minute that narrowly missed the target.
Despite the efforts, neither team could find the breakthrough, and the game ended in a goalless draw, marking the first such result in the group stage.
With one point each, both teams remain tied for third place in the group. To have any chance of advancing to the knockout stage, they will need to secure a victory in their final group match.
