Cosafa Cup 2024 Set to Kick Off Amidst Regional Excitement and High Expectations

Posted : 25 June 2024

The 23rd edition of the Cosafa Cup kicks off from June 26 to July 7, showcasing top regional teams vying for the prestigious trophy amidst a busy schedule of national team activities, including upcoming Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers. Viewers can catch all the thrilling Cosafa Cup action live on SuperSport.

Namibia's historic triumph in the 2015 Cosafa Cup marked their first title, joining an elite group of five nations to have claimed the coveted trophy. However, their hopes for another victory were dashed in 2022 as they narrowly fell to Zambia 1-0 in extra time. Namibia also made history by hosting the tournament for the first time in 2016.

Mozambique, Eswatini, and South Africa have distinguished themselves in the competition, with each securing the bronze medal on multiple occasions. Mozambique notably lost the 2022 third-place match to Senegal in penalties after a 1-1 draw, continuing their quest for a maiden gold. Meanwhile, Lesotho's journey has seen them reach the semifinals three consecutive times from 2017 to 2019, with a second-place finish in 2023 marking their best performance yet.

South Africa, a dominant force in recent years, clinched the Plate trophy three consecutive times between 2017 and 2019 before claiming their fifth Cosafa Cup title in 2021. The tournament format no longer includes the Plate competition, reflecting changes in the event's structure.

The Cosafa Cup's rich history includes notable records such as the most goals scored in a single match by Seychelles' Phillip Zialor in 2008, and the coaching prowess of Zimbabwe's Sunday Chidzambwa, who holds the record with four titles. As the competition evolves with new participants and achievements, all eyes are on Zambia's bid for a record-breaking hat-trick of victories, aiming to surpass their own record of seven titles.
