Controversial VAR decision denies Burnley victory in 1-1 draw against Nottingham Forest

Posted : 19 September 2023
A remarkable goal by summer signing Callum Hudson-Odoi propelled Nottingham Forest to a 1-1 comeback draw at home against newly promoted Burnley. The visitors had taken the lead in the first half through another summer addition, Zeki Amdouni.

Nottingham Forest believed they had secured the win when Lyle Foster slotted in a goal, but it was disallowed due to a handball in the buildup.

The controversy ensued in Burnley's quest for their first victory of the season when Lyle Foster had a late goal disallowed during their 1-1 draw with Nottingham Forest.

Foster appeared to have earned his team three points in the second half, only for VAR to rule that Sander Berge intentionally handled the ball in the build-up.

While the hosts dominated the opening 20 minutes, they only managed one significant chance, with Callum Hudson-Odoi being denied by James Trafford.

Meanwhile, Foster and Zeki Amdouni had shots saved for Burnley. Amdouni broke the deadlock just before halftime, calmly and clinically finding the bottom corner from inside the D.

The lead held until just after the hour mark, when Hudson-Odoi brilliantly curled a shot into the far top corner from the edge of the box, rewarding Forest for their strong start to the second half. The late drama unfolded as Foster's goal was disallowed after Sander Berge was judged to have used his arm to control the ball in the build-up.

Burnley has every reason to feel aggrieved as Foster's goal was nullified due to a handball deep into the second half.

It took an extended VAR review before the goal was eventually overturned, with referee Rob Jones reviewing the monitor to determine whether Berge used his arm intentionally to control the ball.

The TV footage was inconclusive regarding whether Berge's use of his arm was intentional, and the decision was far from clear and obvious.
