Conte Keeps Napoli Grounded Despite Strong Start in Serie A

Posted : 03 October 2024

Antonio Conte has led Napoli back to the top of Serie A for the first time since their title triumph in 2023. While he acknowledges the excitement among fans about the prospect of reclaiming the crown, Conte emphasizes the importance of staying grounded as the season progresses. With Napoli currently sitting a point ahead of Juventus, the pressure is on as they prepare to face a resurgent Como, managed by former Spain and Arsenal player Cesc Fabregas, in their next league match on Friday.

Napoli's strong performance this season can partly be attributed to their absence from European competitions, especially after a disappointing title defense last year that saw them finish 10th. As they enter the seventh round of matches, the team enjoys a precarious lead at the top of the table, but they face fierce competition. AC Milan, Inter Milan, and Torino are all within two points of Napoli, while Como, having won their last two matches, sit comfortably in 10th place with eight points.

This weekend also features an intriguing clash between Inter Milan and Torino, with Inter coming off a Champions League victory and Lautaro Martinez regaining his scoring touch. Torino, on the other hand, will be eager to bounce back from two consecutive home losses, first in the cup against Empoli and then to Lazio in the league. Meanwhile, both Juventus and AC Milan are poised to seize opportunities for crucial points, as Juventus takes on struggling Cagliari and AC Milan visits mid-table Fiorentina.

Given the competitive landscape of the league, Conte remains cautious about making bold predictions, understanding that the season is still in its early stages. The experienced coach, who has claimed the Serie A title four times in his career, recognizes the dual nature of Napoli's lack of European commitments. While it allows for more focused training, it also means the squad may not develop the same level of competitiveness as those engaged in continental tournaments.
