Posted : 08 July 2023
In a highly anticipated match, the United States and Canada will face each other in the quarterfinals of the 2023 Concacaf Gold Cup. This will mark their first meeting in a knockout round since the 2007 tournament, where the United States secured a dramatic 2-1 victory.
The United States holds the advantage in their Gold Cup encounters, with four wins and a draw, including a 1-0 victory in the group stage of the 2021 edition.
The United States has shown a formidable attack in the group stage, scoring a total of 13 goals across three games. Forward Jesus Ferreira has been particularly outstanding, contributing six goals, including consecutive hat tricks against Saint Kitts and Nevis and Trinidad and Tobago.
Ferreira's feat of scoring hat tricks in back-to-back Gold Cup games is a first for a U.S. player. Goalkeeper Matt Turner also made an impact, saving a penalty in the opening match against Jamaica, while midfielder Djordje Mihailovic provided two goals and two assists throughout the group stage.
Canada began their Gold Cup campaign with two draws, including a thrilling 2-2 result against Guadeloupe. They then secured a solid 4-2 victory against Cuba in their final group stage match, earning them a second-place finish in Group D.
Junior Hoilett and Lucas Cavallini have been key contributors to Canada's attack, with Hoilett registering a goal and two assists, and Cavallini adding a goal and an assist. Defensively, Kamal Miller has stood out, displaying solid passing accuracy and making important ball recoveries.
The historical record between the two teams favors the United States, with 18 wins, 12 draws, and 11 losses in their 42 meetings. As they prepare to clash in the knockout stage, both teams will be aiming to secure a place in the semifinals of the Gold Cup.
