Commonwealth Games: Gold Coast to host 2026 Commonwealth Games after Victoria withdraws
Posted : 21 July 2023
Gold Coast is prepared to step up and host the 2026 Commonwealth Games after the state of Victoria withdrew, according to Mayor Tom Tate.
The coastal city, which previously hosted the 2018 Games, is located in Queensland, Australia, which is also getting ready to host the 2032 Olympics in Brisbane. Tate believes that hosting the Commonwealth Games will aid in the preparations for the upcoming Olympics.
Athletics Australia, the country's governing body for sports, fully supports Gold Coast's rescue plan. They are convinced that the city has the capability to deliver a Games of exceptional quality, as demonstrated in 2018, leaving a lasting impact on Australian sports.
They also believe that hosting the Commonwealth Games will have a positive impact on athletes preparing for the 2032 Olympic and Paralympic Games, preserving the spirit of the event.
The Commonwealth Games Federation (CGF) faced challenges in finding a host before Victoria stepped in as a candidate in April 2022.
However, they have not yet explored alternative hosting options for the 2026 Games, as they are currently focused on legal matters and settling the contract with Victoria.
Despite Victoria's decision to pull out due to escalated costs, the CGF is encouraged by the overwhelming global support for the Games.
In 2022, Birmingham agreed to host the Commonwealth Games after Durban had to withdraw in 2017 due to financial constraints. The situation with Gold Coast stepping in to host the 2026 Commonwealth Games is seen as a potential solution to ensure the continuity and success of the event.
