Nigeria’s U-20 girls, the Falconets, have fully recovered from their long trip to Colombia.
According to the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF), the team is now ready to face their counterparts from Australia in the first of two friendly matches organized to ensure their preparation for the FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup, which will take place in Colombia from August 31st to September 22nd.
Coach Chris Danjuma and his team, which now includes fitness trainer Chima Michael, have been working with the Falconets since Monday. They are preparing for the match against the Australians on Friday and for the World Cup finals in general.
The match against the Australian team is scheduled for 10 a.m. Colombia time (4 p.m. Nigeria time) on Friday, at the Club Banco de la República in Bogotá. NFF’s FIFA Match Agent, Jairo Pachon, has assured that all arrangements for the encounter have been completed.
Danjuma’s squad, which was selected from the qualifiers, now includes several players who have also played with the Nigeria senior team, the Super Falcons. These include defenders Jumoke Alani, Rofiat Imuran, and Comfort Folorunsho, as well as forwards Opeyemi Ajakaye, Chiamaka Okwuchukwu, and Flourish Sabastine.
Folorunsho and Ajakaye were part of the Nigeria U-17 squad that finished third at the FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup in India two years ago. Other members of that squad who are also with the Falconets in Colombia are goalkeeper Faith Omilana and forward Aminat Omowunmi Bello.
While these players form the core of the team, exciting talents such as defender Shukurat Oladipo, Chioma Olise, captain Oluchi Ohaegbulam, and forward Juliet Akekoromowei set high expectations for the squad.
The Falconets will face Mexico in another friendly match at the same venue on Monday.
