Colombia 2-0 South Korea: Colombia wins second Women's World Cup with Catalina Usme and Linda Caicedo goals

Colombia made a perfect start to their 2023 FIFA Women's World Cup campaign with a victory over South Korea in Sydney. Catalina Usme opened the scoring for Colombia from the penalty spot, and 18-year-old Linda Caicedo doubled the lead after a mistake from the Korean goalkeeper Yoon Young-geul. This win marked Colombia's second-ever victory in the Women's World Cup.
 
In a historic moment for South Korea, Casey Phair became the youngest-ever player in a Women's World Cup when she came on as a substitute at just 16 years and 26 days old. However, it wasn't enough to secure a win for South Korea, who have now lost all four of their Women's World Cup opening matches. They face a must-win Group H match against Morocco on 30 July, while Colombia will take on Germany.
 
Colombia had bid to host the 2023 tournament and, although they didn't get to play on home soil, their passionate fans made up the majority of the 24,323-strong crowd at Sydney Football Stadium and celebrated their team's victory.
 
South Korea's defensive errors allowed Colombia to take a two-goal lead in the first half. Usme converted a penalty after Shim Seo-yeon handled the ball in the box. Caicedo then capitalized on a mistake from the Korean goalkeeper, who misjudged the flight of the ball, allowing it to slip into the net.
 
Caicedo's performance showcased her talent and potential as one of the tournament's promising young stars. Her goal made her the second-youngest player to score at a Women's World Cup, following in the footsteps of Brazil's Marta, who achieved the feat at 17 in 2003.
 
Despite a close chance to extend their lead in the second half, Colombia secured the victory, putting them in a good position to qualify from Group H, level on points with favorites Germany.
