Super Eagles forward Samuel Chukwueze came off the bench to score for AC Milan in their heartbreaking 2-1 defeat to Lazio on Sunday.
The Rossoneri hosted Lazio at the San Siro for a crucial Serie A encounter. Both teams featured Nigerian players, with Chukwueze representing AC Milan and Fisayo Dele-Bashiru on Lazio’s squad. However, neither player was included in the starting lineup. The first half saw end-to-end action, but AC Milan found themselves trailing after Mattia Zaccagni found the net in the 28th minute, giving Lazio the lead at halftime.
Throughout the second half, AC Milan pushed for an equalizer but struggled in the attacking third. Their situation worsened when Strahinja Pavlovic received a red card in the 67th minute. In an attempt to salvage the game, coach Sergio Conceicao introduced Chukwueze in the 70th minute, and he made an immediate impact. Left unmarked inside the box, the Super Eagles winger capitalized on a cross and directed a precise header into the net.
Unfortunately for AC Milan, their joy was short-lived. Deep into stoppage time, they conceded a late penalty, which Pedro successfully converted in the eighth minute of added time. The match ended 2-1 in favor of Lazio, leaving AC Milan empty-handed despite their efforts.
Chukwueze’s role in Conceicao’s squad has been limited this season, as he has not been a regular starter. The lack of game time suggests that he is not yet a key figure in the coach’s tactical plans.
Despite this, the Nigerian forward has managed to score twice after coming off the bench under Conceicao’s management. His recent performances highlight his potential as a game-changer whenever given the opportunity.
With AC Milan’s other wingers struggling to find form, Chukwueze’s contributions could prompt Conceicao to reconsider his selections. It may be time to give the Super Eagles star a starting role to maximize his impact on the team.
