Christmas Champions Remo Stars league leaders

Remo Stars of Ikenne will celebrate the Christmas holiday as the league leaders of the 2023/2024 Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) after a well-deserved 2-0 victory over second-placed Lobi Stars FC of Markurdi in Ikenne for the Match Day 15 fixtures.


The victory means that the Sky Blue Stars have now topped the league standings for four consecutive weeks, although with one point, they might be temporarily knocked off if the second-placed or third-placed team plays before them.


The Gbenga Ogunbodede side will savor their first win of the league diadem after pursuing the same for about four years running.


The Sky Blue Stars, in their quest to win their first top-flight crown, scored two late goals to go past a stubborn Lobi Stars on Thursday evening.


It was such a tough MatchDay 15 encounter at the Remo Stars Stadium, as the top of the table NPFL clash lived up to its hype, with fans held spellbound.


No goal was scored in regulation time, but the Sky Blue Stars, who left it late, had Adams Olamilekan to thank for his brilliance.


Red-hot striker Sikiru Alimu scored a dazzling header from a corner kick delivery by Adams Olamilekan in the first minute of added time.


The Sky Blue Stars doubled their goal advantage in the 4th minute of added time after Adams Olamilekan pounced on a loose ball in the area and slammed home a second.


As it stands, Remo Stars are top of the NPFL log with 29 points as the league heads for the Christmas break, while they could extend their good run if they beat struggling Heartland at the Dan Anyiam Stadium next Thursday to also celebrate the new year as 2024 league leaders.


Red-hot Remo Stars' Sikiru Alimi celebrated his 10th goal in style, and he is now poised to win the highest goal scorer award.
