Posted : 06 December 2023

Christine Sinclair, Canada's soccer legend, bid an emotional farewell to international soccer in a heartwarming tribute match against Australia, securing a 1-0 win in her home province of British Columbia. Sinclair's illustrious career, marked by numerous team accomplishments and personal achievements, has left an indelible mark on the sport.

The world's all-time leading scorer, often humble despite her immense contributions, was the center of attention on this special night, with a pre-game honor guard and tribute video, evoking tears of gratitude from the 40-year-old striker.

Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau expressed appreciation for Sinclair's impact on the game and sports in Canada, emphasizing that her legacy will be celebrated for years to come. Sinclair, who announced her retirement in October, started the match and played a pivotal role in the only goal, contributing to Quinn's score in the 40th minute. With approximately 48,000 spectators in the renamed stadium dedicated to her, Sinclair's performance was a fitting conclusion to her storied international career.

As Sinclair was substituted in the 58th minute, she shared hugs with teammates on the field, receiving a standing ovation from the crowd. Reflecting on the night, she expressed joy and contentment, stating that going out with a win in front of friends and family made it a perfect farewell.

Sinclair, who made her senior international debut at 16, leaves behind a legacy of 190 goals in 331 games for Canada, an Olympic gold medal in 2021, six World Cup appearances, and numerous accolades, including the Best Fifa Special Award for Outstanding Career Achievement in 2021.

While retiring from the international stage, Sinclair plans to continue playing for the Portland Thorns in the National Women's Soccer League, showcasing her enduring passion for the sport. The tribute match and Sinclair's impactful career have solidified her status as a national treasure and a revered figure in Canadian sports.
