Christian Purslow to step down from Aston Villa chief executive role
Posted : 12 June 2023
Christian Purslow is set to step down from his role as chief executive and director of Aston Villa, as announced by the club.
Purslow, aged 59, was appointed in 2018 based on his successful commercial endeavors at Liverpool and Chelsea.
Following their defeat in the 2017-18 play-off final to Fulham, Aston Villa faced financial difficulties, including an unpaid tax bill.
Purslow expressed his gratitude for the privilege of leading Villa for the past five years, stating that he leaves the club in a significantly improved position both on and off the pitch.
During his tenure, Villa regained their place in the Premier League, established a competitive professional women's team, and developed outstanding academies for both boys and girls. They also constructed a state-of-the-art training ground and obtained planning permission for the expansion and modernization of their esteemed stadium.
Purslow extended his appreciation to everyone at Aston Villa, including the supporters, for making his time at the club enjoyable.
His appointment came shortly after Wes Edens and Nassef Sawiris took over ownership of Aston Villa, and the two owners praised Purslow for delivering on the ambitious turnaround plan he presented to the club five years ago.
In recent months, Aston Villa pursued Barcelona's director of football, Mateu Alemany, but he ultimately decided to remain at the Nou Camp.
There have been rumors linking the club to Sevilla's sporting director, Monchi, who has previously collaborated with manager Unai Emery.
Aston Villa concluded the 2022-23 Premier League season in seventh place, securing a spot in the play-offs for the Europa Conference League.
