Christian Pulisic's goal propels AC Milan to second place in Serie A

Posted : 10 March 2024

Christian Pulisic propelled AC Milan to the second position in Serie A with the sole goal in a 1-0 victory over Empoli on Sunday. The USA star secured a scrappy win, marking his eighth league goal in a promising debut season in Italy.

Pulisic's strike, deflected off Empoli defender Sebastiano Luperto, ensured Milan claimed the second spot from Juventus, who were set to host Champions League contenders Atalanta later on Sunday. Stefano Pioli's team is currently 16 points behind local rivals and likely champions Inter Milan, who secured a victory against fourth-placed Bologna on Saturday.

Milan now shifts its focus to the Europa League's second leg against Slavia Prague, holding a 4-2 lead from the home leg. While Empoli sits one point above the relegation zone, their performance against Milan, led by survival specialist Davide Nicola, suggests they may have what it takes to avoid relegation. Nicola's team shares 25 points with Lecce, who currently hold the 15th position after losing 1-0 at home to Verona, another team in the relegation battle.

In an unexpected turn of events during the Lecce vs. Verona match, the spotlight shifted away from the result. Lecce coach Roberto D'Aversa made headlines by headbutting Verona striker Thomas Henry in a contentious encounter in southern Italy.

Lecce promptly condemned D'Aversa's actions in a statement, asserting that such behavior goes against the club's values and those of sportsmanship. After the defeat, Lecce finds themselves in the 16th position, just one point above the relegation zone, while Verona climbs to 13th with their second consecutive win.
