Christian Pulisic moves to AC Milan for €22 million
Posted : 13 July 2023
Christian Pulisic, the Chelsea midfielder, has completed a move to AC Milan, as the London club continues to reduce its squad size. Pulisic has signed a four-year contract with Milan, which includes the option to extend it until 2028. He will join Ruben Loftus-Cheek, who recently transferred to the San Siro. The American international will wear the No. 11 shirt for Milan.
Pulisic follows other Chelsea players like Mason Mount, Kai Havertz, Kalidou Koulibaly, and Cesar Azpilicueta in leaving Stamford Bridge, as manager Mauricio Pochettino aims to make significant changes to the squad. Milan has seen a number of former Chelsea players join their ranks, including Olivier Giroud, Fikayo Tomori, and Tiemoue Bakayoko.
The transfer fee for Pulisic is believed to be around €22 million (£18.8m), consisting of an initial €20 million plus an additional €2 million in add-ons. Pulisic initially joined Chelsea from Borussia Dortmund in January 2019 in a £58 million ($63.6 million) deal but was subsequently loaned back to Dortmund for the remainder of that season.
During his time at Chelsea, he won three major trophies, including the 2021 Champions League.
Pulisic departs Stamford Bridge after making 145 appearances for Chelsea, scoring 26 goals, and providing 17 assists. However, the previous season was challenging for him as he struggled to secure consistent playing time in a disappointing campaign for Chelsea.
He made 30 appearances across all competitions but only started in 10 matches, scoring just one goal.
Although Lyon reportedly expressed interest in Pulisic and made a higher bid of €25 million, the player had set his sights on a move to Italy. It is worth noting that Pulisic does not count as a non-EU signing for Milan, as he holds a Croatian passport. One of the two non-EU spots was already occupied by Loftus-Cheek.
Pulisic will hope for a revival in his club career, having continued to impress on the international stage with the United States. He was a key figure in the team's World Cup campaign in Qatar, starting in all four matches and contributing one goal and two assists.
Pulisic was also awarded the Player of the Tournament as the USA emerged victorious in the CONCACAF Nations League finals, defeating Canada.
