The head coach of Chosen Generation Angels, Victor Agbagu, acknowledged that stage fright played a significant role in their performance as they chase an NWFL Premiership promotion spot.
The Ogun State-based team struggled early on, with two late goals conceded in the first half setting the tone for their match at the 2024 Nigeria Women Football League (NWFL) Championship.
“I think the girls were a bit disturbed. I would attribute it to stage fright affecting them,” Agbagu told www.thenwfl.com.
“It was their first time in this kind of competition, and I believe that had a significant impact. Despite the setbacks, we came out strong in the second half, even though we continued to concede goals.”
“Looking forward, they are eager to shake off their stage fright after a tough 5-1 defeat to Papa Soccer Angels. Agbagu remains optimistic and is focused on addressing the team’s shortcomings.
“The new players we introduced in the second half made a difference. Even the younger players, like the 14-year-old Ogaga-Oghene Eunice who scored a consolation goal, showed promise,” he added.
Agbagu emphasizes the importance of learning from each game. “Football is a game of learning. We had several chances in the first half that we failed to convert. Our strikers, including our top scorer from the Nationwide League last season, missed crucial opportunities,” he said.
“We need to work on these aspects before our next match, including improving the players’ psychological readiness.”
The Wasinmi-based side faces Delta Babes, Ibom Angels, and Unification FC in their remaining fixtures at the Championship in Calabar. Agbagu is hopeful that with continued effort and focus on their weaknesses, Chosen Generation Angels will be better prepared for their upcoming games.
