Stanley Nwabali's South African Premier League team, Chippa United, has opted to align with Nigeria over their home country for the upcoming 2023 Africa Cup of Nations semi-final against Nigeria.
Nigeria is set to face Bafana Bafana at Stade de la Paix on Wednesday, vying for a spot in the AFCON final. In contrast to the Nigeria Professional Football League, the South African PSL boasts 30 players representing their nations in Ivory Coast.
Among the PSL players remaining in the AFCON is standout goalkeeper Nwabali, who has displayed impressive performances.
Before the crucial match, the Chairman of Chippa United, Siviwe Chippa Mpengesi, issued a statement. Mpengesi commended the PSL board for their efforts in attracting high-caliber players to the league and acknowledged coach Hugo Broos for selecting players from the league for the national team.
In an unexpected turn, rather than rallying support for South Africa, Mpengesi declared that he and the club are throwing their support behind Nigeria.
