Chippa United's CEO, Siviwe Chippa Mpengesi, disclosed that he rejected an offer from Kaizer Chiefs for Super Eagles goalkeeper Stanley Nwabali due to its insufficient amount. Despite Nwabali's standout performance in the 2023 AFCON, which attracted interest from various international clubs, he was also on the radar of PSL team Kaizer Chiefs.
Nwabali ultimately chose to remain with Chippa United, signing an upgraded three-year contract that includes a promotion to team captain. This move ensured his continued presence with the Chilli Boys, despite the interest from rival clubs.
In contrast, Kaizer Chiefs secured the services of Rwandan goalkeeper Fiacre Ntwali from TS Galaxy. Ntwali had previously showcased his skills by making nine crucial saves against the Super Eagles, helping his team to a draw in their encounter.
Mpengesi explained that while Nwabali was considered a potential signing for Kaizer Chiefs, the offer they made was undervalued compared to Ntwali. He expressed dissatisfaction with the financial terms offered by Chiefs and other interested parties, including AmaZulu, who were also seen as undervaluing Nwabali.
The Chippa chairman noted that discussions with Kaizer Chiefs occurred before the season ended, but the club eventually chose another goalkeeper. He emphasized that their offer was not competitive and failed to reflect Nwabali’s true worth. Mpengesi criticized AmaZulu’s offer as well, describing it as "peanuts" and indicative of disrespect.
Mpengesi’s comments suggest that the valuation and negotiations did not align with Chippa United's expectations. Despite this, he expressed that any reasonable offer would have been considered, but the proposals received were far below their anticipated value.
As Nwabali heads into the upcoming PSL season, he is in excellent form, having kept two clean sheets for the Super Eagles during the international break. His strong performances have positioned him well as he prepares for another season with Chippa United.
