Posted : 01 August 2023
England put on a stunning display to secure a convincing victory against China and advance to the last 16 of the Women's World Cup as group winners. Lauren James, the star of the match, scored two sensational goals and provided three assists, showcasing her exceptional talent on the big stage.
The game started perfectly for England as James set up Alessia Russo for the opening goal and later fed the ball to Lauren Hemp, who calmly slotted it into the bottom corner. James then struck a first-time shot from the edge of the box to make it 3-0, but another spectacular finish was ruled out by VAR for offside.
In the second half, China responded with more aggression and managed to score from the penalty spot after VAR detected a handball by defender Lucy Bronze. However, James continued to shine and volleyed Jess Carter's cross into the net for England's fourth goal. Substitutes Chloe Kelly and Rachel Daly also got on the scoresheet.
England's dominant performance raised eyebrows and showed their potential as they head into the last-16 match against Nigeria. China, on the other hand, was eliminated from the competition as Denmark secured the second spot in Group D.
England's manager, Sarina Wiegman, tactically unleashed their attacking talent against China, who struggled to match their physicality and intensity. James, Hemp, and captain Millie Bright were standout performers, showcasing their skill and determination.
After narrow 1-0 wins against Haiti and Denmark, England was eager to assert their dominance from the start, and they did just that. Although China had chances in the second half, they were outplayed by England throughout the match.
Goalkeeper Mary Earps made two important saves to deny China's chances, although she would have liked to keep a clean sheet. With this impressive performance, England quelled doubts about their ability to perform without the influential Keira Walsh.
England's spectacular performance against China demonstrated their potential to go far in the tournament, and fans are eagerly anticipating their last-16 match against Nigeria.
