Chile, Peru Battle to 0-0 Draw in Copa America Opener

Posted : 22 June 2024

Chile, the two-time Copa America champions, commenced their campaign for a third title with a challenging 0-0 draw against Peru in Arlington on Friday. The match, held at the Dallas Cowboys' AT&T Stadium, saw both teams struggle to assert dominance, ultimately resulting in a draw that bolsters Argentina's chances of topping Group A.

Chile's missed opportunity came early, with veteran forward Alexis Sanchez failing to convert a prime chance in the 16th minute. Sanchez, a key player in Chile's Copa America triumphs in 2015 and 2016, received a well-placed pass from Victor Davila but, with ample time and space, sent his shot over the bar. Reflecting on the miss, Sanchez acknowledged the importance of seizing such opportunities in the Copa America.

Despite the missed chance, Sanchez expressed contentment with Chile's overall performance. He noted that the team felt good about their play, maintaining a positive outlook despite the frustration in front of goal. Chile controlled 65% of the possession but managed only one shot on target, with Sanchez's miss remaining their best opportunity of the match.

The game itself was marked by disjointed play, with frequent fouls disrupting the flow and contributing to a lackluster display. Peru's best chance came near the hour mark when Gianluca Lapadula volleyed over from close range. Peru's coach, Jorge Fossati, was optimistic about his team's performance, highlighting their improved play in the second half. The draw leaves Argentina, who defeated Canada 2-0 in their opening match, at the top of the group. Chile will face Argentina next in a highly anticipated match in New Jersey.
