Talented Arsenal goalkeeper Chiemela Ude has recently become provisionally cap-tied to England after making her competitive debut for the Young Lionesses. This significant milestone occurred earlier this month, marking an important step in her career as she gains recognition in the youth football scene.
Ude, who is eligible to play for the Super Falcons due to her Nigerian heritage through her father, is currently in a competition between the English Football Association and the Nigeria Football Federation for her commitment. As a dual-national player, she has garnered a reputation as a formidable shot-stopper, particularly known for her skills in saving penalties.
The 16-year-old donned the number 13 jersey during her first official match for England’s youth team, which resulted in a resounding 7-0 victory against the Faroe Islands in a qualifier for the 2025 UEFA Women’s Under-17 Championship. This match took place at St George's Park in Burton upon Trent on October 7, highlighting her rapid ascent in the sport.
By participating in this official match, Ude must now file a one-time change of association should she wish to switch her allegiance to the Nigerian national teams in the future. This situation reflects the complexities that young athletes face when navigating international eligibility rules.
Ude is the third player of Nigerian descent in the U17 category to be provisionally cap-tied by England recently. She follows in the footsteps of her Arsenal teammate Omotara Junaid and Manchester City forward Jane Oboavwoduo, both of whom have also made significant strides in their careers.
The young goalkeeper joined Arsenal during the 2021-2022 season after the club secured her signature against competition from London rivals such as Chelsea, West Ham United, and Millwall. This move has proven to be a pivotal moment in her development as a player.
Before her debut with the Young Lionesses, Ude had experience as a goalkeeper for Essex County and the South East of England Region, as well as being part of the England U15 schoolgirls team. Her skills were recognized when she was named the Most Valuable Player at the JPL Warriors PGA 2024 Pre-Season Tournament in Warwickshire, showcasing her potential on the field.
