Super Eagles forward Chidera Ejuke was on the brink of securing his first goal for Sevilla in their 2-0 defeat to Girona at the Ramon Sanchez Pizjuan Stadium on Sunday, but a VAR review nullified his attempt.
Ejuke was included in Sevilla’s starting lineup for their La Liga match, while Kelechi Iheanacho began the game on the bench. Sevilla was yet to secure a win in their first three games of the season and was eager to claim their first three points against a formidable Girona side, which had finished third in La Liga the previous season.
The match was competitive, but Girona took the lead in the 41st minute with a goal from Ivan Martin. Just two minutes later, Ejuke appeared to have equalized with a well-executed goal, only for it to be disallowed for offside after a VAR review.
Had the goal stood, Ejuke would have become the first Nigerian player to score for Sevilla. The disallowed goal was a significant moment, as it denied Ejuke a potential milestone.
Sevilla, trailing 1-0 at halftime, struggled to mount a strong challenge in the second half. Despite Ejuke’s energetic performance and efforts to create opportunities from the left flank, Sevilla was unable to break through Girona’s defense.
In the 73rd minute, Girona extended their lead with a penalty goal from Abel Ruiz, sealing the 2-0 victory. Sevilla’s inability to score meant that the game ended with a two-goal deficit.
Iheanacho remained an unused substitute throughout the match, while Ejuke played the full 90 minutes. Sevilla’s search for their first win of the season continues as they grapple with early-season struggles.
