Chiamaka Nnadozie guides Paris FC to historic Champions League victory against Wolfsburg
Posted : 19 October 2023
In a Wednesday night match, Chiamaka Nnadozie, the Super Falcons goalkeeper, played a pivotal role as Paris FC triumphed over Wolfsburg 2-0, securing their place in the UEFA Women's Champions League group stage after a ten-year absence.
Wolfsburg, a two-time champion, had an advantage at the outset following their 3-3 draw with Paris FC at Stade Charléty in Paris a week ago. Victory in any form at Wolfsburg's AOK Stadion would have guaranteed a group stage spot for the seven-time German Bundesliga champions, especially considering their strong record of just one loss in their last 13 UEFA Women's Champions League games.
Paris FC, however, had different plans. In the 12th minute, they had an opportunity to take the lead when Faëtane Thiney missed a penalty. Fortunately for them, Nnadozie was spared in the 22nd minute when Pajor's attempt hit the woodwork.
With seven minutes left in the first half, Julie Dufour stunned the home fans by giving the visitors the lead. Just five minutes into the second half, Nnadozie made a crucial save from Pajor's goal attempt as the Germans sought an equalizer.
Wolfsburg was awarded a penalty kick in the 60th minute after a foul on star player Popp, but Nnadozie saved Dominique Janssen's 12-yard shot, winning the psychological battle. Paris FC fiercely defended their lead, and in injury time, substitute Louise Fleury doubled the French team's advantage, eliminating any hopes of a Wolfsburg comeback.
Nnadozie made two crucial saves in the closing stages, securing Paris FC's 5-3 aggregate victory and their first group stage appearance since 2013 when they reached the Champions League semifinals.
