Chelsea's 2021-2022 PL2 top scorer, Fiabema, debuts on final day
Posted : 29 April 2023
Bryan Fiabema had been patiently waiting throughout the entire 2022-2023 Premier League 2 season for an opportunity to step onto the field and make his debut for Chelsea's development squad.
Speculation about his future at the London club only added to the anticipation surrounding his appearance.
Finally, on the last day of the season, Fiabema's moment arrived amidst unexpected circumstances.
Chelsea faced a disappointing 4-1 defeat against Brighton & Hove at Kingsmeadow on a Friday evening, and it was in this match that Fiabema unexpectedly found himself included in the matchday squad.
During the previous season, Fiabema had been a standout performer for Chelsea's U21s, emerging as the joint-top scorer with eight goals to his name.
These goals were spread across various competitions, including four in the Premier League 2, three in the UEFA Youth League, and one in the Papa John's Trophy.
However, the path leading up to his recent appearance had been long and challenging.
Prior to the Brighton & Hove game, Fiabema's last outing for Chelsea dated back to February 9, 2022.
He had played for just fourteen minutes in a match against Racing Genk during the knockout stage of the UEFA Youth League, representing the U19s.
Since then, Fiabema had been sent out on loan to clubs like Rosenborg and Forest Green Rovers.
Originally, his loan spell at Forest Green Rovers was intended to last the entire season, but he was unexpectedly recalled during the January transfer window.
As he waited on the sidelines, Fiabema had missed out on ten consecutive matches played by Chelsea's development squad.
Finally, against Brighton & Hove, his name was called upon, and he entered the pitch as a substitute for the last seven minutes of the game, replacing Harvey Vale.
Unfortunately, Fiabema's arrival couldn't significantly impact Chelsea's performance, as they were already trailing by three goals when he came on.
The Seagulls' Andy Moran (2), Hinshelwood, and O'Mahony had already found the back of the net, while Leo Castledine managed to score a consolation goal for Chelsea, who currently sit in second place in the provisional standings.
