RSC Anderlecht has announced via their official website that Tudor Mendel-Idowu, who came through Chelsea's Cobham academy, is leaving the club. After turning down a contract extension with Chelsea to join Anderlecht, the versatile forward is now set to return to England, having signed a permanent deal with Premier League newcomers Ipswich Town.
Mendel-Idowu, whose grandfather John Adeleye-Abai played international football for Nigeria's Super Eagles, is currently inclined to represent England at the international level. This preference was solidified when he became provisionally cap-tied to England in March 2022 after playing as a substitute in a European U17 Championship qualifier against France.
Despite his departure from Anderlecht without making a senior appearance, Mendel-Idowu has had a stint with RSCA Futures in the Challenger Pro League, featuring in sixteen matches and scoring once in 574 minutes of play.
At Ipswich Town, Mendel-Idowu is expected to start his career with the club's development squad and will be listed as an U21 player in their Premier League roster. He joins a group of fellow academy players including Emmanuel Okunowo, Afikunoluwa Adebayo, Chuks Uzor, Edwin Agbaje, Leon Ayinde, Jesse Nwabueze, and Abube Onuchukwu.
Before his move from Chelsea, Mendel-Idowu made his debut for the development squad during an EFL Trophy match against Peterborough United in November 2022. He also appeared as a non-playing substitute in a Premier League 2 match against Leicester City two months later.
His transition to Ipswich represents a significant step in his career, as he will look to make an impact in English football following his time in Belgium. Mendel-Idowu's progression will be closely watched as he aims to develop further in the competitive environment of the Premier League.
With his new club, Mendel-Idowu will be eager to make a name for himself and continue his footballing journey, showcasing his talent and potential in the English top flight.
