Chelsea is on the verge of finalizing the acquisition of goalkeeper Djordje Petrovic from New England Revolution for a fee of £12.5 million, along with additional add-ons totaling £1.5 million.
At 23 years old, Petrovic hails from Serbia and is an international player for his country. His arrival at Stamford Bridge will intensify the competition for the coveted number one goalkeeping position, as he vies with Robert Sanchez.
This move follows Kepa Arrizabalaga's temporary departure to Real Madrid on loan and Edouard Mendy's transfer to Al-Ahli.
With 43 appearances in the MLS for New England Revolution and two caps for Serbia, Petrovic brings both experience and international exposure to the Chelsea squad.
Chelsea's goalkeeper roster has seen some challenges recently, with Marcus Bettinelli sidelined due to injury. Meanwhile, the 20-year-old Lucas Bergstrom has made appearances on Mauricio Pochettino's bench for the initial two games of the Premier League season.
During this transfer window, Chelsea has invested approximately £323 million in securing eight players, marking the highest expenditure of any European club. Furthermore, they have established a new record for the highest summer spending by any club globally, surpassing Real Madrid's £292 million spent in 2019.
Under the ownership of Todd Boehly, who took the helm last summer, Chelsea's total spending has exceeded £850 million.
As they strive for their first victory of the season, Chelsea is set to face Luton in a home Premier League match on Friday night.
