Chelsea seeks to trim squad, comply with Financial Fair Play regulations

Chelsea is undergoing significant changes ahead of the 2023-24 season after a disappointing campaign. The club, under new owners Todd Boehly and Clearlake Capital, is looking to trim their bloated first-team squad and comply with Financial Fair Play regulations. High-profile departures have already begun, and more are expected to follow.
Alongside departures, Chelsea is also focusing on signings, with forward Christopher Nkunku already secured and other potential additions in the works. The most prominent arrival, however, is new manager Mauricio Pochettino, who is set to begin his tenure on July 1st.
The previous season was a disastrous one for Chelsea, finishing 12th in the Premier League, their lowest position since 1993-94. They suffered multiple managerial changes, with Thomas Tuchel, Graham Potter, Bruno Salter, and Frank Lampard all taking charge at different points. Lack of progress, poor performances, and fan dissatisfaction led to these managerial changes.
Chelsea's transfer strategy also came under scrutiny, as they spent around £600 million on signings in the summer of 2022. The squad became bloated and unbalanced, lacking a world-class striker despite the significant investment. Many players were signed on long-term contracts, contributing to the team's dysfunction.
As the club looks to move forward, the aim is to reset and establish a clearer plan for success. The upcoming season will see a revamped Chelsea side, both in terms of players and coaching staff, as they seek to leave behind their disappointing past and embrace a new era under the ownership of Boehly and Clearlake Capital.
