Chelsea seek £38 million defensive cover for Wesley Fofana injury

Chelsea's manager, Mauricio Pochettino, continues his efforts to rebuild the team, and recent reports suggest that Axel Disasi will be the next addition to Stamford Bridge this summer. The 25-year-old French international central defender is set to join from Monaco for a reported fee of approximately £38 million, as Chelsea seeks defensive cover following Wesley Fofana's injury.
According to The Athletic's David Ornstein, Chelsea has reached a deal in principle to secure the services of Axel Disasi. The highly-regarded defender, who usually plays on the right side of a defensive pairing, has been a consistent performer since joining Monaco from Reims in 2020.
He has been linked with a move to the Premier League for some time, and despite rumored interest from Manchester United and other clubs, it seems that he will start his English career at Stamford Bridge under new Chelsea boss Mauricio Pochettino.
Axel Disasi will join Christopher Nkunku, Nicolas Jackson, and Angelo Gabriel as one of Chelsea's summer signings. Interestingly, he will also be reunited with former Monaco colleague Benoit Badiashile, who made the move to Chelsea in January.
Chelsea has been in the hunt for a central defender since Wesley Fofana's injury, which could keep him sidelined for a significant part of the season. There have been continued rumors of Brighton's interest in Levi Colwill, who spent the previous campaign on loan at the south coast club.
Pochettino has been tasked with leading a major improvement in Chelsea's performance this season, and he has already started reshaping the squad. Besides new signings, the team has seen departures, including N'Golo Kante, Edouard Mendy, Christian Pulisic, Kai Havertz, Mason Mount, and others.
These departures are aimed at raising funds to facilitate further acquisitions and balance the books after significant spending during the previous transfer window under Todd Boehly.
